FORESTVILLE, NY (March 30, 2012) - For the staff at Merritt Estate Winery, there is nothing quite like the anticipation and excitement of producing a new wine. There are so many important decisions to be made. A grape varietal must be chosen, sweetness determined and a natural flavor could be added. By far, the most important decision is that which will brand the wine forever; the name.
After months of planning and execution, formulas and legalities, Merritt Estate Winery will release the newest addition to their list of award winning wines. XTC, labeled as a sweet and sexy grape wine with natural pomegranate flavors, will hit liquor store shelves in early April. The new dessert style wine has been available for tasting and purchase at the winery and at off premise wine events for a little over a month now and has already gained a following beyond the Winemaker's expectations.
"It's always a little bit intimidating to put a new wine on the market," said Jason Merritt, General Manager and current Winemaker for Merritt Estate Winery. "We put the product through testing for weeks, tasting for sugar content, flavor content and making changes to the overall formula of the wine. In the end you just have to trust that you know what your consumer is looking for, and by the overwhelming positive response we've seen to the XTC, I think we nailed it."
The unofficial release of XTC came on Valentine's Day and proved to be a holiday favorite. The winery nearly sold out of its first batch during the Lake Erie Wine Trail's Wine and Chocolate Weekend. The sold out event was a major push for the XTC, allowing hundreds of new and returning customers to taste and purchase the wine for the first time.
"After the success we had with the XTC over Wine and Chocolate Weekend, we knew that we had a serious chance of making it our next best selling wine," said Jessi Luke, Public Relations and Promotions person for Merritt Estate Winery. "We kept seeing the same kind of excitement in the tasting room week after week and at off premise wine events. When the liquor stores started calling and inquiring as to why they didn't have access to it yet? We knew we had a winner."
Merritt's XTC was scheduled for availability in liquor stores starting April 1st. A list of all liquor stores that currently carry Merritt Estate wines is available on the winery's web site. In the case that a liquor store near you does not carry Merritt wines or does not yet carry XTC, customers can place a request with that liquor store for the wine. Merritt is continuously accepting new accounts and guarantees customer satisfaction.
